    • Hatchet 2012

Congratulations to Hatchet, winner of the 2012 Spring Core League season and the Bliss Cup! With its short, hammer-perfect handle, the red team captained by Taylor Pope and Sharon Tucker hacked down the competition during Sunday's Spring League playoffs. That makes two Spring League titles in consecutive years for Hatchet and two consecutive league championships for Pope (having won the Winter League championship in February).

Before we get to the weekend's details, the commissioners would like to thank those players who stepped up to captain teams this year. Several captains volunteered or were coerced at the last minute when teams had no one to draft for them. A big "Huzzah!" to all of the captains.

We would also like to thank all the Spring League players for their patience with public-field issues. After our initial run-in with Bethesda Athletic Association, there were no further confrontations regarding dogs or alcohol or trash. In fact, it eventually became clear that the trash problem occurred only on weekends when league games were canceled because of rain.

So, great work, everyone! Thanks for keeping up our reputation with Durham Public Schools. (And please donate to the Ultiplex so we can play un-harassed!)

Spring League 2012 Tournament

As per usual in Spring League, the standings coming out of the regular season weren't entirely representative of team strength. Spring busy-ness and active high school and college seasons prevented full rosters at many of the regular season games.

Complicating the picture were some last minute substitutions that left several teams with replacement players and the green team of LeMuell with essentially new captains for the weekend, Sasha Resnick and Dave Snoke replacing Becky LeDonne and Matthias Mueller. David Trett, unable to play for Black Sabbath (Greene and Mitchell), was replaced by Eric Martin.

The teams met Saturday in two pools of four teams at Lowe's Grove and Bethesda:

Bethesda Pool Results:

Seed) Team W   L
1) Safety First (White - West) 3 0
3) Black Sabbath (Black - West) 2 1
4) Fool's Gold (Graphite - East) 1 2
2) All For The Wookiee (Blue - East)     0 3

The West division's Safety First, captained by Matt Bode and Jesse Lieberman, dominated the day's pool play at Bethesda. Black Sabbath took the pool's second seed, and the graphite-wearing Fool's Gold (Askew and Peed) took third. Although Bethesda Athletic Association never showed up to eject the hairy beasts, injuries and no-shows kept All for the Wookiee (Guthrie) in last place in pool.

Lowe's Grove Pool Results:

Seed) Team W   L
1) LeMuell (Green - East) 3 0
2) Blue Dogs (Light Blue) 2 1
4) Kessler (Orange - West)   1 2
3) Hatchet (Red - East) 0 3

LeMuell won the pool at Lowe's Grove decisively, relegating Blue Dogs (Hoyle and Gifford) to second seed and Team Kessler (Faulkner and Kessler) to third.

The Lowe's Grove match-ups took an unexpected turn when three of Hatchet's leading men decided their day would be better spent playing golf, and off they went halfway through the first game of the day. So, missing Taylor Pope, Brian Lang and Mick Ribault, as well as Jon McLeod,  who was unable to play on Saturday, Hatchet was left with one male sub. The red team still managed to post 12 points in its loss to Team Kessler, it's closest rival on the day.

Playoff Sunday

Of course, pool play in an eight-team tournament is just gravy. Quarterfinal matchups:

11:00 AM - B#1 Safety First  vs LG#4 Hatchet
9:00 AM - LG#2 Blue Dogs vs B#3 Fool's Gold
11:00 AM - LG#1 LeMuell vs B#4 All For The Wookiee
9:00 AM - B#2 Black Sabbath  vs LG#3 Kessler

Team Kessler, possibly the oldest team ever to complete a TFDA league season, parlayed its extra 112 years of life experience to a universe-point win over the youngest team in the league, Black Sabbath. On the other field, Fool's Gold did indeed turn out to be just graphite, losing cleanly to Blue Dogs, 10-17.

In the second round of quarters, All for the Wookiee got a fresh shot of Brian Brickhouse to replace an injured Pete Wentz and looked to be clawing its way into the semifinals against LeMuell, taking half at 9-8. But LeMuell returned from half with fresh shots all round and a pressure D that allowed only two more Wookiee points. Final score: 17-11, LeMuell.

The top seeded Safety First, expected to advance easily to the semis, would have been a shoo-in but for the Ringer reunion happening on Hatchet, their last-seeded opponent. Expecting fireworks from the captains, spectators lined the field, wondering if Bode v. Pope would be as exciting as Bode v. Proctor had been in Winter League. But even with Matt Bode, Jesse Lieberman and Katy Harris leading the charge, Safety First left the field chopped and bloodied, losing 15-12 at the time cap. Game Highlight: James "Freight Train" Morton leaving his man in the dust for a nearly full-field huck from Lieberman and a leaping back-line catch for the score.

In the semis, LeMuell handled the oldsters of Team Kessler with aplomb, 17-9, and was rewarded with 30 minutes to rest before the finals. Hatchet felled Blue Dogs, 17-12, in a much longer battle that sent the bloody reds into the finals glistening with sweat and complaining about 17-point playoff games.

LeMuell's opening cheer: "Bury the Hatchet!"

While temperatures the day before had barely gotten above 65 degrees, with clouds lingering all day, by Sunday afternoon the players were drinking gallons of Gatorade and huddling under parasols. To make matters worse for Hatchet, the game started off with six points of back and forth that featured multiple turnovers and left the score at only 3-3 after 20 minutes.

As the game wore on, Hatchet lost track of the score and began to hallucinate. Several players insisted there were points missing from the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the scorekeeper was too hot and heckled to remember much of the final game besides the exceptional number of turnovers and the fact that Hatchet started gradually to widen its lead. The team's huckers began to find good long cuts, and all of a sudden it was halftime, Hatchet 9 - LeMuell 5.

Hatchet's opening cheer: "Hatchet to the face!"

The bloodbath promised in the opening cheers looked to be taking form, even though play on the field was well spirited. LeMuell didn't gain much traction immediately after the halftime break. Hatchet scored two unanswered points to go up, 11-5. Then began a slow Green march, almost imperceptible. From six points down ... to four points down ... to game point ... another game point ... and another. But at 15-16, LeMuell could stave off the swinging axe no longer. The hatchet was indeed buried to the hilt. Final score: Hatchet 17 - LeMuell 15.

Congratulations once again to the 2012 Bliss Cup winners and defending Spring League champions, Hatchet!

Hopefully, we'll see everyone again soon at Kudzu, the Memorial Day Hat Tournament, &/or in one or more of our Summer Leagues (women's & men's midweek or coed weekend).

TFDA is hosting our first EVER hat tournament on Memorial Day!  Come to the Triangle for Kudzu; stay for this hat tournament!  All proceeds benefit the Ultiplex project.

We only have 3 fields at Cedar Fork park in Morrisville (smack-dab in the middle of the Triangle), so we will form 6 teams and cap registration after 108 players (and 72 males).  3 pool play games will determine standings for bracket play.

Undefeated Winter League Champs!

by on Mar 11, 2012 12:00 AM
(Written by Christian Schwoerke)
TFDA's 2011-12 Winter League Tourney champ—Ol' Dirty Backhand, captained by Taylor Pope and Alicia Morrison—was undefeated during the season play (17-0), with a divisional 7-0 record, an interdivisional 4-0 record, and a tourney pool-play record of 3-0, and an 8-team single-elim record of 3-0.  No other team in TFDA WL history has ever achieved a perfect season record and followed with the tourney championship, much less doing so without a single loss through every phase of the season.

Tourney play consisted of pool play for four pools of teams, each scattered at different 2-field sites throughout the Triangle.  Ol' Dirty Backhand headed up Pool A, which played at Carrboro's Anderson Park; Not After Day (8-3 regular season, captained by Bryan Brickhouse and Caroline Guthrie) was atop Pool B, which played at UNC-CH's Hooker fields; The Bodey Smith Experience (9-2 regular season, captained by Matthew Bode and Victor Smith), was #1 seed in Pool C, which played at Lowes Grove Middle School in Durham; and LeMuell (7-4 regular season, captained by Motts Mueller and Becky LeDonne) reigned over Pool D, playing at the Thompson Road fields in Garner.

On a very windy Saturday (with steady 15+ mph all day long), three pools held seed, while Pool A saw an upset, with the 3rd seed Occupi (Mike Riley and Mick Styers) gaining the number two spot from Klan de Banan (Chris Waluk and Harrison Bartels).  This single upset was largely due to Klan's number one player (Josh Torrell) being absent in the first game due to a canceled US Airways flight from DC..

Pool Play results:

Pool A
Ol' Dirty Backhand (Pope) 3-0
Occupi (Riley) 2-1
Klan de Banan (Waluk) 1-2
Sunny D (Jackson) 0-3

Pool B
Not after Labor Day (Brickhouse) 3-0
Morrelly (Morris)  2-1
Sky High (Liebermann) 1-2
Gang Green (Parker) 0-3

Pool C
The Bodey Smith Experience (Bode) 3-0
Bowlzuka (Bowles) 2-1
Tebowner (Bolding) 1-2
Red Dawn (Denardsi) 0-3

Pool D
LeMuell (LeDonne) 3-0
Snokone (Snoke) 2-1
The Plague (Bivins) 1-2
Red Squad (Williams) 0-3

On a much calmer Sunday, with only slight intermittent breezes, all seven of the elimination games were played at the artificial turf fields on UNC-CH's Hooker Fields.  Only two fields were available and quarters games were played at 9am and 10:45am.

Quarters results
Ol' Dirty Backhand over Snokone 15-7
Not After Labor Day over Bowlzuka 12-11
The Bodey Smith Experience over Morrelly 15-12
Occupi over Lemuell 12-11

Semis results
The Bodey Smith Experience over Occupi 14-12
Ol' Dirty Backhand over Not After Labor Day 15-8

Winter League Spirit Awards

by on Mar 11, 2012 12:00 AM
    • usau sotg award 2 2011

Spirits soared high upon the winds during the 2011-12 TFDA Winter League.  And each team captain bestowed a special spirit disc to the most deserving team member(s).  Without further ado, below are the recipients for each team.  Well played, all!

Recipient Team Accolade Captain(s)
Kate Briskie Sky High For showing up to every game, playing great, and smiling the entire time! Jesse Lieberman, Katy Harris
Bill Pope Klan de Banan Bill was at almost every game, never had a negative attitude (unlike nearly every other one of us) & was our official over-30 representative. Harry Bartels, Chris Waluk
Kyle Foreman Gang Green Kyle traveled great distances to play a tough grueling winter league. Mike Jolley even stated this may be the first spirit disc given to an ex-ECU player... Just sayin' Jay Parker
Mike Moore Not After Labor Day His hard work and style of play was a huge factor in establishing our team identity. He never seemed to have an "off" moment all season. And he is the man. Bryan Brickhouse, Caroline Guthrie
Nick Hoang Snokone He made every game this season and came up big for the team on several occasions.  He also brings a great cheering section with him.  We look forward to teaming up with him in the future. Dan Snoke, Sion Stone
Britta Jones
Occupi Britta was a positive force for the Occupi movement, playing hard throughout the season, even returning to the field a couple of weeks after a surgery that was expected to sideline her much longer.  Britta also stepped up and served as Occupi's musical director, a key role. Mike Riley, Mick Styers
Sara Allen Sunny D Sara was a team leader on & off the field, fulfilling many of the duties & tasks that a captain normally handles - verifying weekly game attendance, finding subs, & making sure that the tournament was a positive experience for the whole team! Brandon Jackson, Joey Cherry, Scott Lewis
Josh Greene LeMuell Josh is everything you want in a teamate:  supportive, friendly, dedicated, spirited and competitive. He is a mentor and role-model for our younger players and an awesome teamate for us all. It was a pleasure having him on the team. Becky Ledonne, Motts Mueller
Eugene and Kari Morgan Bowlzuka This package deal was always there on-time, working hard, and overly encouraging of everyone's play. They made our team very positive and quick to forget our mistakes, focusing on making the next point better. They were a constant reminder of why we play ultimate -- by playing  hard, encouraging others, and remaining honest and fair at all times. Evan Bowles, Brett Matzuka
Danny Marlow Red Squad The spirit disc this year was a tough one, because every member showed great spirit throughout the year. Danny tore his ACL in our first game this year, putting him out of commission for the season. Nonetheless, he braved the cold and wind to cheer us on Saturday during pool play, and more importantly, went on not one, but TWO beer runs for the team! Brian Williams
Hannah Goodwin-Brown The Plague Aside from her awesome play all season long, Hannah made sure The Plague was well stocked in powerful nicknames (Picante!), proposed awesome jokes (which I can’t recount here, since TFDA is a family website), and played with half a lung!!! Hannah has range, TFDA. She owns with words & deeds. Jason Bivins
Megan Tarasi The Bodey Smith Experience Megan consistently was the most positive player on the team. She was always willing to play as much as needed, despite our chronically low female numbers, and soldiered through a sprained ankle during the tournament to give the rest of our women some much needed respite. Thanks Megan! Victor Smith, Matt Bode
Ben Schoenebeck Morrelly Ben always managed to have a great attitude, whether we were tied at 17's, or losing by 10.  In a tight game, it was great to know we could count on someone to not only lead us on the field, but also keep spirits up in the huddles.  If you're wondering which one Ben was, he was the one with the mohawk-ish hair who probably skied your tall guy while smiling the whole time. Julie Morris, Joey Connelly
Steven Mazzarelli, Katie Kennedy, Tina Kelliher Red Dawn These three friends showed an equal amount of spirit and dedication to Red Dawn, so we couldn't pick just one.  All were a pleasure to play with and we'd love to have them as teammates again. Wolverines!!! Mike Denardis, Tristan Green
Jon McLeod Ol Dirty Backhand When M.C. Cloud wasn't doing his rain monster bombs dance, he was literally going stratus all over your cumulonimbus wannabees. I mean, man sees disc, man spears that disc with a lightening bolt like somebody just went hubris all over Zeus. Take shelter cuz Jonathon McLeod is about to make it rain. ODB may you RIP(ped it!) ...We poured one out for you, brotha.....Stay Dirty, Raleigh. Stay Dirty. Taylor Pope, Alicia Morrison
Ben and Sara Dieter (co-MVPs) & Chris Hughes (spirit) Teboner "If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters.  Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude." (Colin Powell)  Every once in a while, you get the opportunity to play with folks who define excellence. Te-Bone-Er would like to recognize a few folks who showed what true excellence really is. The selection this year was very "hard-on" me as a captain!! Our MVP disc went to Ben and Sara Dieter, who carried the Teboner squad through the season not only with their talents on the field, but also with their unending support when on the sidelines as well. It was a real pleasure to play alongside the Dieters this season and our team definitely learned a lot from them. The Teboner spirit disc went to Chris Hughes, who was a joy to compete with as well. He was always ready to cover whoever I asked him to, even picking up several lay-out Ds along the way this season. Chris showed the rare speed and quickness needed to effectively cover both cutters and handlers. He played every game with a smile on his face and really lifted the spirits of the Teboner squad this year. Special thanks to the Dieters & Chris for really "erecting" the spirits of Teboner this season!! Jon Bolding

TFDA Owns Land!

by on Jan 3, 2012 12:00 AM

On December 29th, TFDA closed on over 20 acres of land for the Ultiplex on Riley Rd!  This enormous step has been in the works for over 10 years and has taken the efforts and funds of too many TFDA members to recognize.  That being said, we now have even more work to do to actually build our own set of fields and the first frisbee park in the nation.  The game is simpler now, as the only thing standing between us and completion is fundraising.

An Ultiplex Committee has already been formed to make decisions about construction and fundraising.  However, this committee and the TFDA Board is barely a dozen people and we can't pull this off alone!  This project will define TFDA as a whole and so TFDA as a whole needs to define this project.  You can donate your funds, donate your expertise, donate your time, we need all of it.  There are many avenues to pursue in the realms of grants, corporate partnerships, internet fundraising, etc...  and if each of you helps us just a little with one of those we will be on our way.

If you'd like to help out on the Ultiplex project, contact us at . Or check out our volunteer page on the site at Volunteer. And donations are always helpful!
